WORKS AS EXPECTED
By ace moonbeam
The unit that I bought is LG model GH24NSB0B on Amazon. I bought a 10 pack of blank M-discs branded Milleniata which seems to be a joint venture with LG and Hitachi according to the labeling.
The discs look different, with a gray surface. The surface is highly transparent; for normal CDs and DVDs this is often a sign of a defective disc, but apparently these are designed that way.
The discs are in standard 4.7GB DVD+R format, which means you can't record audio CDs: you can only do what you can do with regular DVDs, burn movies or burn files. I had just finished archiving the first ten CDs so I decided to burn a backup data disk of these uncompressed wav files, which filled 98% of a data DVD. I did this on a i3 desktop running Win 7.
The LG unit installs itself with no outside drivers needed. It acts in every way like a regular DVD burner. I used a popular commercial creator program to burn the data disc. I presume because the laser is more powerful and the disc medium more durable, the burning process is slow -- it never went above 4x. (Earlier when I used the unit to rip files from CD, it topped 20x while copying.)
After the burn was complete, I tried the disc in regular standard DVD players in both my desktop and laptop, and had no trouble reading them.
I used the unit in a number of traditional copies and burns with regular CDs and DVDs, and had no problems at all.
So it appears the technology is a success. Due to pricier discs, I would use it only for archiving. The price may come down if M-disc catches on, but I have my doubts that optical discs have much consumer life left in them.

So far a good choice
By Marco D Caristo
So far this burner has been great. The Nero Software is a little more clunky than previous versions and is only a starter "free" version but for simple applications is quite sufficient and I was thankful for it, much better than using Windows burning system.

Great buy! Geat product!
By D. H.
I got this as a second DVD/CD RW for my machine. The primary DVD/CD RW is the same model and make. It was cheap in price, well made and all of the hardware needed for installation was in the box. It also came with a trial version of Nero... Bottom line. It was received within the time frame promised and the installation only took a matter of minutes. Great product for the price! I'd recommend it.
I'd buy this again.
